The last I saw of Michael was that day in Dalkeith, as he was escorted like a condemned man to McAlister’s Butchers’ shop. Just the three of them together and determined to walk with as much dignity as their various states of dress and distress would allow. They looked like three old Mexican bandits heading out into the prairie after the gun battle for the South Texas bank. Any other day, it would have been quite funny to watch, but knowing the likely consequences of what had just happened, not even a shoeless old lady in a confused state could make me smile. It did cross my mind that it might just be the perfect opportunity to rob her of the leather bag. That’s the last thing she would expect, but I decided to pass on that one.
